April kicks off Autism Awareness at IVY Integrative! Autism diagnosis has become more common in recent years and now covers a broad spectrum of disorders due to its vast range of symptoms.
Autism is defined as a complex neurobehavioral condition including impairments in social interaction and developmental language and communication skills combined with rigid, repetitive behaviors. It typically begins in early childhood and lasts throughout later life. The effects are usually a combination of both genetic and environmental factors.
Children with autism have a very different way of learning, thinking, problem solving and often experience difficulties with communicating. Autism can make it challenging to understand what other people think and feel, making it exceptionally hard for autistic individuals to express themselves with words or through gestures and facial expressions.
Very sensitive children with ASD may be greatly troubled — sometimes even pained — by sounds, touches, smells, or sights that seem normal to others. Routine is extremely important for this population as well as the ability to predict the outcomes of certain behaviors and places. A break in routine or exposure to loud, overstimulating environments can overwhelm a person with ASD, leading to outbursts of anger, frustration, distress, or sadness.
Many dietary recommendations suggested to benefit this population have changed over time, and I will dive deeper into this in later emails this month. But in this email I wanted to highlight some of the amazing benefits seen in treating ASD children with the Bowen Therapy Technique!
