What is a Physical Therapist?
Physical Therapists (PTs) are movement experts who use evidence-based research to diagnose and treat individuals with a range of pain and injuries. PTs aid in restoring and maintaining physical function and mobility that may be hindered by lifestyle, occupation, aging, accidents, and deteriorating diseases.
Due to the extensive amount of knowledge needed to be a Physical Therapist, many PTs are becoming Doctors of Physical Therapy (DPT). This training entails a three year post-graduate education resulting in movement dysfunction expertise, extra training in all areas of musculoskeletal treatments, and in-depth doctoral research.
What can physical therapy do for you?
Physical Therapists work with a wide variety of patients. If movement is an issue, a physical therapist may quickly become your best friend.
Some common concerns that PTs address include:
MSK conditions: Carpal tunnel syndrome, trigger finger, back pain, rotator cuff tears, TMJ
Pediatric conditions: Developmental delays, cerebral palsy, and muscular dystrophy
Female conditions: Pelvic floor dysfunction and urinary incontinence
Lung conditions: COPD, cystic fibrosis, and heart-attack recovery
Geriatric conditions: Fall prevention, post-stroke and paralysis recovery, pain management, trauma recovery
What does it look like to work with a Physical Therapist?
During your initial appointment, your Physical Therapist will perform a range of physical exams, unfold your health history, and take a detailed evaluation your posture, joint range of motion, flexibility, and strength ability. After your initial intake, a diagnosis, prognosis, and care plan will be formulated by your PT. Several follow-up appointments are recommended for best results. Your PT will track your progress and likely encourage home-exercises to expedite healing time.
