The Gut–Skin Connection: How a GI Map Can Reveal the Root Causes of Eczema

While eczema can have a variety of contributing factors, gut health remains a pivotal component to consider. An overactive immune system, poor microbial diversity, and underlying infections have all been correlated with eczema. Since 70–80% of the immune system originates in the gastrointestinal lining, utilizing a GI Map can be a valuable tool in managing eczema.

Intestinal dysbiosis—an imbalance or disruption of gut microorganisms—can lead to infections within the gastrointestinal tract. Eczema may be exacerbated by viral, bacterial, or fungal infections, or by reduced microbial diversity. Examples of gut infections linked to skin conditions include Staphylococcus aureus, herpes viruses, and Candida species. When such infections are present in the gut, they may be addressed through pharmaceutical interventions, antimicrobial, antiviral, or antifungal herbs, or a combination of both approaches. Individually tailored probiotics are also commonly recommended when poor or imbalanced diversity is identified. Additionally, specific dietary recommendations may be included to support gut balance and skin health.

Leaky gut is another important consideration when exploring how eczema may be influenced by gut function. Zonulin, a protein found in the gastrointestinal lining that helps regulate the intestinal barrier, has been associated with various conditions, including eczema. Elevated zonulin levels indicate that the gut’s permeability barrier may be compromised, allowing toxins, food particles, bacteria, and other antigens to pass into the bloodstream. This increased permeability can trigger systemic inflammatory or immune responses, potentially worsening eczema symptoms.

A GI Map—a comprehensive stool analysis—helps determine the makeup of an individual’s microbiome. It screens for underlying infections, evaluates inflammatory markers, measures intestinal health, and assesses the overall function of the gastrointestinal tract. While eczema is often influenced by multiple factors, utilizing a GI Map can be an effective way to uncover underlying contributors and support a more comprehensive, individualized treatment approach.
