FOCUS: Oncology Support • Neurological • Endocrine • Sleep • Digestive • Pain Management • Psychological and Emotional Health
Tom Cohen is a Licensed Acupuncturist with more than 20 years of clinical experience. He has taught at both acupuncture schools in North Carolina and completed a two-year postgraduate training program in Chinese Herbal Medicine.
After spending more than seven years practicing Supportive Oncology within a major hospital system, Tom has treated thousands of patients experiencing xerostomia (dry mouth), neuropathy, nausea, and many other side effects related to cancer treatment.
Tom takes a systematic, patient-centered approach to care, working collaboratively with each individual to identify their health goals and develop a personalized treatment plan to achieve them. His ultimate goal is to help patients reach lasting improvements so they require fewer treatments over time to maintain their health. He utilizes the principles of Chinese Medicine to customize treatment plans based on each patient's unique needs, interests, and preferences.
Before beginning his acupuncture training in 2001, Tom spent more than 10 years working in Human Services. During that time, he supported adults with developmental disabilities and autism and worked at the former George Shinn Uptown Men's Shelter, providing care for individuals experiencing homelessness and dual diagnoses.
As an adult with latent-onset Type 1 diabetes, Tom was misdiagnosed and treated as having Type 2 diabetes for nearly 10 years. His determination to advocate for appropriate testing, along with his firsthand experience of the impact of nutrition on health, inspired him to pursue a Master's degree in Nutrition. He is expected to complete his degree and 1,000-hour internship in December 2026, after which he plans to sit for the Registered Dietitian licensure examination. His goal is to combine traditional Western nutrition assessment and therapy with integrative, evidence-based Chinese Medical Food Therapy to provide comprehensive nutritional care.
Outside of clinical practice, Tom is a writer, musician, volunteer with a dog rescue organization, and a dedicated student and instructor of martial arts for more than 30 years. He lives in Charlotte with his wife and their five rescue dogs.
